Happy Flaming June!
Now that the great yellow orb has re-appeared in the sky to bathe us in warm sunshine, and the Haar hugs the coast, our thoughts turn to nice days out on the hills, and…. The Ancrum Mountaineering Club June Weekend Meet. This June 8th-10th we are off to the Naismith Hut, in Elphin, under the big skies of Assynt.
The Naismith has nice views of the mighty Suilven from its’ downstairs windows, along with Cul Mor and Canisp. It’s a good base for the Assynt Munros , Corbetts, and other lovely hills such Suilven, Stac Pollaidh, Canisp, Ben More Assynt and Seana Braigh. Not to mention some nice beaches. It has all the usual refinements with heating and cooking are by propane gas and electricity, lighting is electric. The hut has drying room, toilets and a shower. The kitchen has a cooker, fridge and microwave. The hut sleeps 10, ( 8 +2 spaces for SMC members), on alpine sleeping platforms, so you will need your sleeping bag. The Custodian suggested bringing our own tea towels, and maybe some toilet roll because “these things seem to disappear very quickly”. We have 6 spaces booked, but there are 2 further spaces available.
Location: Elphin. Map reference: OS sheet 15; 216118. Drive through the village of Elphin. Follow the last side road on the right (north entrance) to the small loop road off the A835 as you are leaving Elphin on a right hand bend. It tends to come into view suddenly. The hut is the building just under Cnoc Breac (280m) and is the second entrance on the left end of the loop road.
The cost of this weekend is £17pp/pn for accommodation, with petrol £25-£30 for passengers.
This leads us to the new SMC hut prices. Those of you who were at the AGM will be aware that this year the SMC increased their hut fees by £5 a night for all their huts, except Ling, which increased by £2 pn. Whilst the SMC hut fees have been static for a good few years, this is a big jump. Unfortunately, this is an increase the club can’t absorb, and it is with a heavy heart, that we have to pass on the increase to members. The SMC has a good network of comfortable huts in good prime locations. However, the cost of many commercial bunkhouses is higher than this, and we do have a better chance of having an SMC hut to ourselves. The custodian of the Raeburn Hut did push to keep the increase to £2 pn, but he was defeated. Having spoken to him and from later emails, I can tell you he is not happy about what has transpired, but it would appear he was a lone voice. I hope that the increase doesn’t put you off going on SMC hut meets, they are generally good, in good locations.
Phone in for the meet is on Tuesday 5th June, 8pm-9pm only, to Ian.
Looking forward to seeing you in Elphin- don’t forget your sleeping bag, tea towel, loo roll and of course, your toothbrush.
