It’s October, the nights are drawing in, and the leaves are turning on the trees, autumn is here. What better way to spend an Autumn evening than in front of a warming fire, with friends at the Ancrum October Weekend Meet? This October Weekend Meet is a trip to the mighty Blackrock Cottage, with new improved luxury coal shed facilities, this coming weekend, 11th to 13th October. For this booking, we have the whole hut, which holds up to 10 people.
Here’s the gen,
Location: Blackrock Cottage, lies at the foot of Meall a’ Bhuird, Rannoch Moor at the entrance to Glen Coe, post code PH49 4HZ. OS map 41, GR NN268530.
Situation: Access to the cottage is off the A82 on the same access road as the Glencoe Mountain Resort which is clearly signposted. There is parking space for up to 5 cars outside the cottage.
Accommodation: Sleeping accommodation is in two upstairs bedrooms (accessed by a steep stairway, nice rope ‘hand rail’) each with four single beds, and in one downstairs room with a bunk bed, giving a total of ten beds. Mattresses and pillows are provided – you will need a sleeping bag. A tea towel is also be useful for drying the dishes.
Downstairs there is a fully equipped but basic kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, toaster and kettles- please note there is no fridge. There is also a sitting / dining room. The wonderfully re-vamped (and now heated) coal shed houses a toilet, wash hand basins, shower and a drying room (eeeeeeh, luxury). Heaters, drying room and shower are on a £1/ £2 coin meter. No camping is allowed, however, Camper Vans are allowed, but if the hut facilities are used then the hut fee applies (this is the LSCC’s rule).
Facilities: Electric lighting, cooking, all kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery are provided. Drinking water is available from the coal shed taps, and of course there are the new toilet (remember, it’s on a septic tank folks!), wash hand basins, shower and drying room. There is an open fire in the sitting room and a coal-burning stove in the kitchen. There is a good supply of coal/ compressed wood logs and kindling in the coal shed. Entertainingly, the kindling in the sitting room is stored in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet next to the fireJ
The cost will be £14 pp/pn, and £20, approx, for petrol for passengers. We will also need £1 and £2 coins for the electricity meter in the coal shed to run the new shower, heater and drying room. Please note, you will need new £1 coins. You will also need your sleeping bag. As I said before, we have 10 spaces. This is a great location for the Glencoe Hills (obviously), The Blackmount and Glen Etive, and also the Ski centre, should the snow happen to make an appearance, or if you fancy a hurl on the chairlift.
Phone in will be on Tuesday 8th October, 8-9pm only, to Ian.
Also: Membership Fees for 2019 are still due, the cost being the bargain price of £25, which gives you unfettered access to the club’s 11 weekend and 11 monthly day meets, a chance to see Santa at the Christmas Meet, and of course, my emails reminding you to come along to a weekend meet. Please send your payment to Tim Wilson, our Financial Whizz/ Treasurer. Please make cheques payable to ‘Ancrum Mountaineering Club’. If you are coming to the meet, you can pay your membership then.
I hope you can come along. I look forward to seeing you there.
