August Meet – Achnasheen

Hi Folks,

I hope you’re enjoying the summer and have had a good holiday. August is upon us and perhaps your thoughts are turning to the hills and the Ancrum Mountaineering Club August Weekend Meet, this coming weekend, 9th -11th August. this month we are heading to Inver Croft in Achnasheen.

Inver is a croft house in a field near the village of Achnasheen. It is a good base for the Torridon and Strathcarron Hills and a pleasant spot.

Location: Get to specific layby on A890 then walk 300m to hut. From roundabout at Achnasheen (A832 or railway, but no bus service) turn left toward Lochcarron. Layby after 2.4km at: NH147562; or 59033’26″N 5005’55″W; over bridge and along walkway across the field.

The hut has no electricity sockets but some electric lighting from batteries and a generator. There is therefore no fridge or microwave and you will need to charge your phone beforehand.  There are 2 toilets but no shower, however both toilets are suitable for a sponge wash. There is a well equipped Kitchen  with pots etc, cooking is on gas rings and cooker. There is a fireplace in  the living room, for which we will need to provide coal/ logs and kindling (20kg coal/ night is suggested!). The hut  sleeps up to 14 in the upstairs room. Mattresses are provided, but you will need your sleeping bag. There is also a  drying room. A shower may be available at the nearby Ledgowan Lodge Bunkhouse, in Achnasheen, for a small fee (take your own towel, soap etc).

Access is across a wooden  bridge, followed by a walk on a narrow raised duckboard walk and then across a  potentially muddy field to the hut (just follow the posts with  reflectors on them), so you may well need to wear your boots for the walk in (approximately 10 minutes) and your head torch, Cases  won’t be good idea for carrying in your gear. That said, this is a good hut in a good location and is a comfy place to be of an evening.

We have 8 spaces booked, but can take up to 14. The cost of accommodation is £10pp/pn and petrol will be in the region of £25 for passengers.

Phone in is in a slightly different format this month, as Ian has requested that you text him instead of calling him. Please text Ian on Tuesday 6th August, between 8pm and 9pm only.

I hope you can come along.

Karen
