After an interesting start to the year weatherwise, where we’ve been alternately frozen or warmed up a bit much or a cold again, Spring is upon us, and an Ancrum Member’s fancy turns to Easter Eggs, the Easter Bunny and the hills- speaking of which…. the April weekend meet is upon us next weekend (12th – 14th) and this month we are going to the Raeburn Hut, a handily located favourite.
The Raeburn hut is on the A889 road between Dalwhinnie and Laggan (GR NN 6360 9091, alt 319m). The hut has all the usual refinements and accoutrements- shower, toilets, drying room, kitchen, electricity, fridges, microwave, kettles and toaster with cooking by gas. For sleeping, there are also 2 rooms with alpine sleeping platforms with mattresses- you will need a sleeping bag (and a pillow if you want one). There is also parking at the hut. The cost for the hut is £17 per person, per night and the cost of Petrol for passengers will be £20. We have 6 spaces booked, and it looks like more spaces may well be available.
The Raeburn is a nice hut in a great location, with access to the Drumochter Hills, the Ben Alder group, the Monadhliaths, Aviemore and the Cairngorms, Ben a’Chlachair group, Creag Meagaidh, The Tulloch, Fersit and Roughburn Munros and the Grey Corries, Aonachs and Ben Nevis- all within an hour’s drive (and the Pottery Coffee Shop is not far away either!).
Phone in is on Tuesday 9th April, between 8pm and 9pm only. Phone Me, Karen to book your space on this first meet of Spring. Don’t call Ian this time!
In other news of upcoming meets- There is of course our weekend meet to Skye 3rd-6th May. I have asked the Sligachan to re-let the 2 spare beds, but if they aren’t re-let we will lose the cash paid for them. The Slig being popular, I am hopeful we can avoid this, however, If you are now able to come along let me know asap, and I will try and rebook for you. Also a wee reminder about the Mid-May Meet 17th-19th May, A camping Meet for the Ben Alder Group, and the June Meet to Milehouse, 21st- 23rd June- lots of daylight then, so a good chance for some bigger days out in the Cairngorms. Pop them in your diary if they’re not already there.
Don’t forget, you have to call me on Tuesday 9th April to go on the upcoming April Meet you know it makes sense! (even if I don’t).
I’m hoping to get out and about, wobbling permitting. Hope I see you there.
