Glencoe – Blackrock Cottage

Hello Folks,

It’s the end of July, and an Ancrum Member’s fancy turns to the August Weekend Meet- or at least your Meets Secretary hopes it does. The August Weekend Meet is a trip to the mighty Blackrock Cottage, with new improved luxury coal shed facilities, this coming weekend, 3rd to 5th August. As usual we have 6 spaces booked, but the hut holds up to 10, so more spaces may be available. The cost will be £12 pp/pn, and £20 for petrol for passengers. We will also need £1 coins for the electricity meter in the coal shed to run the new shower, heater and drying room. Please note, you will need new £1 coins. This is a great location for the Glencoe Hills (obviously) and Glen Etive.

Here’s the gen,

Location: Blackrock Cottage, lies at the foot of Meall a’ Bhuird, Rannoch Moor at the entrance to Glen Coe, post code PH49 4HZ. OS map 41, GR NN268530.

Situation: Access to the cottage is off the A82 on the same access road as the Glencoe Mountain Resort which is clearly signposted. There is parking space for up to 5 cars outside the cottage.

Accommodation: Sleeping accommodation is in two upstairs bedrooms (accessed by a steep stairway, nice rope ‘hand rail’) each with four single beds, and in one downstairs room with a bunk bed, giving a total of ten beds. Mattresses and pillows are provided – you will need a sleeping bag. A tea towel is also be useful for drying the dishes.

Downstairs there is a fully equipped but basic kitchen with electric cooker, microwave, toaster and kettles- please note there is no fridge. There is also a sitting / dining room. The wonderfully re-vamped (and now heated) coal shed houses a toilet, wash hand basins, shower and a drying room (eeeeeeh, luxury). Heaters, drying room and shower are on a £1 coin meter. No camping is allowed, however, Camper Vans are allowed, but if the hut facilities are used then the hut fee applies (this is the LSCC’s rule).

Facilities: Electric lighting, cooking, all kitchen utensils, crockery and cutlery are provided. Drinking water is available from the coal shed taps, and of course there are the new toilet (remember, it’s on a septic tank folks!), wash hand basins, shower and drying room.

There is an open fire in the sitting room and a coal-burning stove in the kitchen. There is a good supply of coal/ compressed wood logs and kindling in the coal shed. Entertainingly, the kindling in the sitting room is stored in the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet next to the fire 😊

For anyone hoping to go earlier in the day, the LSCC have received a notice that there is a scheduled power outage for Blackrock from 1pm to 4pm on Friday 3rd Aug.

Hopefully it won’t affect us, but just in case you arrive before it goes back on. The fire alarm board in the cottage will be beeping during the outage, but will automatically reset itself once the power is back on. If you are there, you can either put up with the beeping (its not too loud) or turn the key as per the instructions. If you turn the key, be sure to turn it back as soon as the power is on. This is very important to turn the key back.

The Custodian, won’t be available on the 3rd as they’ll be away but if you have a problem, Mary Stewart’s, Hut Custodian, phone number is posted in the hut.

Also, there is an outdoor Harry Potter movie event going on at the Glencoe Ski Centre the weekend that we are there. Glencoe will likely be mobbed, especially if the good weather is still around.

It is also very likely that there will be added interest in Blackrock during the event. Although LSCC encourage all their members and visiting clubs to be polite to people who stray onto the private property, please do not permit anyone you do not know to come into the cottage and also, politely, advise them that it is private property. Also, there is absolutely no tent camping within the curtiledge of Blackrock. The Blackmount Estate are very firm about that and from time to time, they have had to ask people to move on. Thousands of photographers pass by to photograph the cottage and LSCC do not discourage that but they should not come beyond the gate.

Phone in is on Tuesday 31st July, 8-9pm only, to Ian.

I hope you can make it,

Karen

Your ever hopeful Meets Secretary
