Culter Fell July 2017

What a great day out we had on the July day meet. Dave T requested the Southern Uplands and I suggested a route up Culter Fell doing a horseshoe circuit around the hills at the head of Holms Water.

Myself, Allan B and Dave headed down to the Broughton/Tweedsmuir area and up the Holm Water valley to the end of the public road. From here we ascended Culter Fell up a quad bike track to the bealach to its north. The ground was quite rough going as it was very tussocky and rather wet in places! After Culter Fell we then headed south along the ridge line to take in Gathersnow Hill (what a wonderful name) which didn’t gather any snow for us just rain. We then completed our walk by heading over Coomb Hill before descending back down into the glen. Not the sunniest of days on the hill, but not the wettest either. The rain that we did encounter was in the form of short lived showers with decent dry spells between them.

To round off our walk we stopped at the Laurel Bank tea room in Broughton for coffee/tea and scones.

Here is a route map of our walk https://osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/route/1348691/Culter-fell-and-Holms-Water-circuit.
